SANA’A – At least 33 people were killed and 50 wounded in a suicide attack early Wednesday on a police academy in the Yemeni capital of Sana’a, a security source told Efe.
The attack was carried out by a suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle, apparently targeting a group of trainee cadets outside the Police College.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack; although the security source pointed out that it bore the hallmarks of the al-Qaeda branch in Yemen, known as Ansar al-Sharia.
Most of those waiting in line outside the Police College were members of the Shiite Houthi movement which had been granted 150 places in the training facility following a peace accord agreed in September between the Houthis and the government.
Earlier, the Houthis had seized control of the capital after weeks of protests over a hike in fuel prices.
Under the accord, Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi pledged to form a government of consensus and ensure greater participation for the Houthis, who in turn agreed to withdraw their militias from Sana’a.
