Obama’s Approval Rating Rises, According to Latest Poll

WASHINGTON – The approval rating for U.S. President Barack Obama has risen 7 percentage points since October, according to a new survey published Wednesday by the CBS television network.

About 46 percent of Americans approve of the way the president is doing his job, exactly the same percentage as those who disapprove.

According to the study, the improvement is due in large measure to the fact that a number of Democrats and independent voters, who were very disenchanted with the president’s policies through the November midterm elections, have changed their opinion.

Just before the legislative elections, Obama’s popularity was quite low among Democrats due to the play-it-safe approach he had taken on a number of issues for fear of harming the chances of Democratic lawmakers facing tough election battles.

In the midterm elections, Republicans won a decisive victory, taking control of the Senate and maintaining control of the House, thus ensuring that they will hold a majority in Congress starting this month.

Meanwhile, although just one third of independent voters said that they approved of Obama’s job performance last October, now 45 percent of them do, a hike that appears to be due to good economic figures released over the last few weeks.

About 43 percent of Americans say that Obama’s policies have helped the economy, while a third believe that they have harmed the country, and 57 percent say that the recent sharp fall in oil prices is helping the economy.

Fifty-seven percent of those surveyed say that the deadly terrorist attacks staged last week in Paris have increased their fears of an attack on U.S. soil, although that figure is below the number of Americans – 66 percent – who felt that way after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.

The president’s approval rating is 18 percentage points higher than George W. Bush had at the same point in his second term, but it is below the approval ratings that Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan enjoyed.

About 65 percent of Americans approved of Clinton’s performance at this point in his presidency, while just over half of those surveyed felt that way about Reagan at the corresponding time.

The telephone survey was conducted between Jan. 9-12 among 1,001 adults around the country and has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
