SAN JUAN – Sony Puerto Rico in March will end its operations in the U.S. commonwealth after 25 years due to economic problems affecting business on the island.
The Tecnetico Web site reported the move on Thursday, saying that Sony Puerto Rico’s decision to terminate operations will mean closing down its offices on the island, although the firm already cut back its services by 40 percent there last year.
Those cutbacks affected mostly employees working in the firm’s finance, services and information systems departments.
Tecnetico said that the company will also close its warehouse in the Amelia Industrial Park in Guaynabo, near San Juan, and its two stores, located in the capital’s Plaza Las Americas mall and in the Mayagüez Mall, in the western part of the island.
The publication said it had confirmed the information with different sources, including the president of Sony Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rivera, although Efe was unable to reach any of the firm’s top officials to verify the report.
Rivera said that after the 40 percent cutback in Sony Puerto Rico employees last year, local operations were largely taken over by Sony Interamerica, the headquarters of which are located in Panama.
