Federal agents arrested an elusive drug smuggler on Monday.
Agents with the Homeland Security Investigations division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Ediel Tejada, 34, with assistance from local lawmen in Starr County. Federal agents in Laredo, McAllen and San Antonio worked on the investigation, which remains ongoing.
Two other people also were arrested, according to a Facebook post by District Attorney Omar Escobar, who oversees the 229th Judicial District.
Authorities raided Tejada's home in Starr County and plan to initiate civil forfeiture proceedings against him.
Tejada is the nephew of a convicted drug smuggler who was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison in 2013.
Authorities are working to determine if others were involved in the smuggling network.
Tejada is currently behind bars at the Starr County Jail.
