TEGUCIGALPA – The head of the Real Club Deportivo España soccer team, his bodyguard and the driver of a moto-taxi were gunned down Thursday in northern Honduras, police said.
Businessman Mario Verdial, one of the three presidents of the soccer club, one of the four best teams in Honduras, his unidentified bodyguard and the taxi driver were shot by gunmen in two vehicles, said the National Police spokesman in the city of San Pedro Sula, Jorge Rodriguez.
The multiple murder occurred in the municipality of Villanueva, near San Pedro Sula, in the Caribbean province of Cortes.
Apparently, Verdial was traveling from a ranch he owned to San Pedro Sula in a pickup truck when gunmen driving in two vehicles opened fire on him the police official said.
As a result of the gunfire, Verdial’s vehicle went off the road into a ditch, while the taxi driver – who had been waiting for passengers at an assembly plant at the scene – was also hit by at least one bullet and killed, the police report said.
Rodriguez said that one of the vehicles used by the gunmen who attacked Verdial has already been found.
Last year, violence in Honduras took the lives of an average of 16 people per day, according to government figures.
