DHS: Shield against deportation can be extended

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Young immigrants who have won government protection from deportation can apply for another two years of protection.

Homeland Security Deputy Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas says U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services will start taking renewal applications for immigrants already enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program starting immediately.

As of April, more than 560,000 young immigrants in the country illegally have been approved for the deportation reprieve launched in advance of the 2012 presidential election.

Mayorkas is announcing the program's renewal in the midst of President Barack Obama's latest push to get Congress to pass a comprehensive immigration bill in advance of November's midterm elections.
