BUENOS AIRES – Nearly 31 percent of the people in suburban Buenos Aires are living in poverty and six out of every 100 residents are indigent, media outlets said Thursday, citing a new study from the Universidad Catolica Argentina.
UCA’s 2013 survey found that 3 million residents of the blue-collar belt surrounding the capital are in households with a monthly income of less than 4,100 pesos ($506).
The figures for Buenos Aires city actually showed a reduction in the poverty rate, from 9.8 percent in 2012 to 7.7 percent last year.
Buenos Aires and its environs constitute the industrial, financial and political center of Argentina, though many factories in the suburban belt have been derelict for more than a decade.
The capital region is home to 12.8 million people, nearly a third of the country’s population, according to the most recent census data.
Argentina’s census agency, Indec, has not released a report on poverty levels since mid-June 2013.
