Two women found a 4-year-old child in his underwear, alone, bruised, dehydrated and barefoot in the middle of a road.
The La Feria Police Department arrested  Jaime De La Garza on a charge of abandoning or endangering a child.
His 4-year-old son was found walking by himself on the West Business 83 and Mile 3 Lane in La Feria, police said.
On Tuesday, July 8th, two good Samaritans in  a van stopped and took care of the child, while they waited for police to show up to the scene.
Officers were dispatched to the scene, and a woman told police she provided the 4-year-old water as he appeared exhausted and dehydrated.
The child was safe in the two women’s van, as they waited for police to respond to the call.
One of the women asked the child where he lived, but he was uncooperative and did not want to talk, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Action 4 News.
An officer made contact with the child, and noticed he “had several bruises” and “healing lacerations on his legs, feet and abdomen area”, court documents said.
The child was taken to the La Feria Police Department, as officers attempted to find the parents of the child in the area he was found.
That’s when De La Garza ran out of a home and said, “that’s my child, where is he, thank God you found him,” police documented.
De La Garza explained he vanished from the house “without explanation” while the family was watching movies and eating.
De La Garza said he looking for his child, but was not able to find him.
De La Garza was arrested on the State Jail Felony charge.
Child Protective Services was contacted about the incident, and the child was placed in the care of his mother.
De La Garza was booked into the Cameron County Jail, and his bond was set at $20,000.
