There is only one person who really knows what happened to a missing 8 month old baby who vanished more than four years ago. The woman at the center of the mystery is in Albuquerque.
The mother has told different stories. That she gave the baby away to strangers or even killed the baby. The case made national headlines. People in every state have been looking for baby Gabriel since Christmas 2009. The only person who knows the truth is now a New Mexican.
Elizabeth Johnson was released from an Arizona prison Friday. But no one in law enforcement could ever get her to explain what happened to her baby, Gabriel.
Elizabeth Johnson’s name became synonymous with black market child sales. Suspicion still surrounds Johnson that she sold her baby into an underground web of illegal child adoptions, but nobody has ever been able to prove it. Johnson has changed her story or under oath, never offered one.
Johnson initially told the child's father that she killed the baby. Then she told police she gave the baby to strangers in a park in San Antonio, Texas.
But others believe, after her relationship with Gabriel’s father soured, she conspired with another woman to put her baby on the black market. Was that the truth? Nothing was ever proved.
Elizabeth Johnson went to prison in 2012, guilty of custodial interference. Last Friday, she was released and she asked for permission to live with her grandmother in Albuquerque.
We found their house, but when she and her grandmother arrived they backed their car out in haste nearly hitting another local TV crew and made it clear Elizabeth still didn't want to offer explanations about what happened to Gabriel.
A few minutes later she returned. Still no answers, no signs of Gabriel, and no way to know if Elizabeth Johnson will ever offer the truth.
Some have asked why Elizabeth Johnson has never been tried for murder. The answer, there is no evidence that Gabriel was killed. Many people, including many in Arizona law enforcement, believe Gabriel is alive.
