LA PAZ – An ailing 5-year-old Bolivian girl was raped at a medical center, allegedly by a male nurse, and died soon afterwards when she was taken to a village hospital in the central Cochabamba region, a government official said Tuesday.
Ombudsman Rolando Villena expressed Tuesday his “indignation and alarm” after hearing of the rape and death Saturday of a little girl from the village of Capinota, who had been taken to the medical center for treatment but instead was raped.
“We are extremely upset by this incident which continues to show a society that seems to have lost it humanity and where there are tragic cases every day to the point of savagery in which most of the victims are women and children,” Villena said in a communique.
The girl’s family took her to the medical center because she had a temperature of 39.5 degrees C (103 degrees F).
She remained there awhile in the care of the male nurse, who was later accused of rape and jailed in a Cochabamba prison, the ombudsman said.
He expressed his particular concern because this case came so soon after a woman was killed in the middle of the street while some 20 people looked on and did nothing.
And in the past few days there have been two attempted femicides, one by a soldier who shot his wife and another by a man who shot a prostitute.
And all this, according to Villena, happened just days after a law passed in 2013 was finally enacted that is designed to protect women from male violence.
