TOKYO – Google announced Wednesday that it had removed search results on a Japanese man from its search engine following a ruling by a court in Japan that the U.S. internet giant had infringed on the petitioner’s privacy.
The sentence was the first of its kind in the country, according to the Japanese media, which related it to the judgment passed by an European Union court granting the “Right to be Forgotten” on the web.
On Oct. 9, the Tokyo District Court ordered Google to remove 120 of the 237 search results that appeared when typing the petitioner’s name, which was linked to a crime committed many years ago.
The petitioner had gone to court to seek the removal of all 237 search results linked to his name, arguing that the information put his life at risk, his attorney, Tomohiro Kanda, told the same agency.
The U.S. company has complied with the ruling and removed most of the relevant results, Google representatives told the Kyodo news agency.
