A rumored plan by the Chicago Public Schools to teach “safe anal sex” and other unconventional sex topics to fourth graders has made its rounds on the internet. According to circulating stories, parents were allegedly appalled to find bothersome topics – reportedly including safe anal sex, female condoms, morning after pills and using lubrication – on the latest sex ed curriculum of fourth and fifth graders in Chicago.
DNA Info released Saturday a report detailing an alleged proposal by the Chicago Public Schools for a new sex ed curriculum designed for fourth and fifth graders. Parents of students from Andrew Jackson Language Academy who reviewed the curriculum binders were reportedly “shocked” and “horrified” by the content of the proposed topics, noting that the lessons included in the curriculum were “appalling” and not age-appropriate. Angela Bryant, chairwoman of the Local School Council, denounced the alleged inclusions in the fourth-grade sex ed curriculum, saying that the topics were composed in “a manner that actually is piquing curiosity about sexual pleasure,” instead of actually containing informative sex education.
The Chicago Public School system immediately issued a statement regarding the curriculum, saying that the inclusion of the overly-risque topics was a mistake. Spokesman for the Chicago Public Schools Bill McCaffrey wrote that the objectionable content discovered in the binders was not intended to be included in the latest topics for fourth graders.
“The objectionable material presented at Andrew Jackson Language Academy this week is not and never was part of the student sexual education curriculum. It was mistakenly downloaded and included in the parent presentation, and we agree with parents it is not appropriate for elementary school students. As part of our sexual health education policy approved by the Board of Education in 2013, Chicago Public Schools offers a comprehensive sexual education curriculum that is designed to ensure age-appropriate material and minimum instructional minutes for every grade level, consisting of family and sexual health education topics for K-12 students.”
The clarification from the Chicago Public Schools officials did not stop people on social media from sharing false information regarding the new sex ed curriculum of fourth graders in Chicago. Fact-checking website Snopes has labeled the rumors as a “mixture” of true and false information. The site noted that although the fact that the objectionable sexual topics have been included in the reviewed curriculum binders at Andrew Jackson Language Academy is true, the statement that the Chicago Public Schools actually intended to teach fourth graders about anal sex, female condoms, and morning after pills is false.
