State employees in Harrisburg have off Jan. 20 in order to reduce the amount of traffic and to free up parking spaces for the thousands of people expected to attend Gov.-elect Tom Wolf's inauguration.
The cost of giving 8,600 employees off is approximately $2.5 million, according to Dan Egan, spokesman for Gov. Tom Corbett's Office of Administration.
"It's a completely logistical and operational decision," Egan said.
"It's not meant as a holiday or a treat day off. It's really for the practical purposes of alleviating the traffic and congestion in the Capitol Complex area caused by road closures due to the swearing-in ceremony and the crowds that are going to be there to witness it."
Inauguration activities will be centered in and around the downtown Harrisburg area.
After Wolf is sworn in on the East Wing Capitol steps, there will be an inaugural exhibit of the Pennsylvania Arts and Children's Program at The State Museum of Pennsylvania and a tour of the Governor's Residence.
Wolf's Inaugural Committee Spokeswoman Beth Melena said the decision to give Harrisburg state employees off was at the discretion of the current administration.
"We're grateful that Gov. Corbett is helping the Wolf Inaugural Committee provide a safe and organized swearing-in for event attendees," Melena said.
State employees in Harrisburg have been given inauguration day off for decades, according to Corbett's Press Secretary Jay Pagni.
"That has been a longstanding practice on any inauguration day," he said.
In 2010, it cost approximately $2.2 million to provide the extra day off to Harrisburg state employees for Corbett's inauguration.
