PARIS – The tentacles of radical Islam have spread into at least 89 mosques in France, a figure that has doubled over the past four years, according to a report by the French Ministry of the Interior quoted in Friday’s edition of the daily “Le Figaro.”
The newspaper said that followers of the radical Salafist version of Islam are seeking to increase their influence in mosques and religious centers all over France.
Citing data from the French secret service, “Le Figaro” indicated that in 2010, fundamentalists controlled just 44 places of worship, which rose to 89 in 2014.
Last year, another 41 attempts to gain control of mosques were detected.
Once they reside in the “sensitive” areas of France’s large cities, Islamic radicals establish self-sufficient communities, the conservative newspaper said, and concluded that “the specter of true radical contagion is overshadowing France’s mosques.”
