BORDER FAIL: Southmost murder suspect identified as Gulf Cartel leader

02/27/2014

A man wanted for participating in a murder in the Southmost area of Brownsville has been identified as a Gulf Cartel leader.
Mexico's Federal Police (PF) reported arresting 37-year-old Javier Garza-Medrano in the colonial city of Taxco on Monday.
Federal police reported that officers arrested Garza-Medrano and five other cartel members without firing a single shot:
• Oliver José Cruz Martínez, 33
• Christian Antonio Cruz Martínez, 31
• Leonardo Miguel de la Rosa Castillo, 27
• Carlos Edmundo Vargas Sánchez, 32
• Víctor Hugo Salazar Cortés, 34
Garza-Medrano is facing numerous criminal charges in Mexico but Brownsville police told Action 4 News that he is also wanted for a botched murder plot on the American side of the border.
Investigators believe that the Gulf Cartel leader is one of several men who planned a hit that ended with an innocent man being killed off Clavel Street back on January 11th.
Brownsville police believe Juan Manuel Ocanas-Barrientos was gunned down in a case of mistaken identity.
Investigators have already arrested murder suspects Victor Hugo Sefores and Felipe Alvaro Cabrera for their roles in the crime.
But detectives said Garza-Medrano and five other men who belonged to a "transnational criminal organization from Mexico" are also wanted for their roles in the murder.
It's not clear if or when Garza-Medrano will be extradited to the United States to face the charges in Brownsville but the jailed Gulf Cartel leader already faces weapons and organized crime charges in Mexico.
