Marin Co. officials seize cache of illegal guns

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. —
Marin County officials said Wednesday that they seized a cache of weapons during a special operation targeting illegal gun owners.
According to the California Department of Justice, currently more than 21,000 Californians are in possession of more than 40,000 guns illegally.
Marin County District Attorney Ed Berberian decided to put his team to work to try to reduce the backlog.
"We want to make sure we get these weapons out of the hands of people that aren't supposed to have them," Berberian said.
The county team went to homes of those prohibited by law of owning firearms because they've been convicted of a crime, are the subject of a restraining order or mentally unstable.
"That is a potential danger point," Berberian said.
More than 29 people in Marin County were contacted during last week's three-day operation including a Novato man with a history of mental illness.
"We learned that he had recently been released from a mental facility. We found numerous weapons in his residence along with a large amount of ammunition, " said Inspector Earl Titman with the Marin County District Attorney's Office.
A total of four guns, including two assault weapons, were seized from the home.
"It's an immediate danger to the community and law enforcement," said Inspector Titman.
California is the only state to cross reference different databases to find people who legally purchased guns but later lost their right to own a weapon.
District Attorney Berberian said he is planning more of the random checks aimed at removing and ultimately destroying guns before they can do anything or anyone harm.
