Connecticut's solution to three "top ten cities" on FBI crime list?: Disarm legal citizens

02/28/2014

HARTFORD, CT(WFSB) -
Three cities in Connecticut were ranked among the most dangerous in the country to live.
Hartford, New Haven and Bridgeport were on the FBI list of the most crime-ridden places in the United States.
New Haven was ranked second, Hartford was fourth and Bridgeport, sixth, according to the bureau's statistics.
The report did say that crime was down, but also that it's still high.
"Every city has its dangers," said one Hartford resident. "I haven't felt, I haven't noticed that it's too bad."
Other people Eyewitness News spoke with in the capital city agreed with the report.
"I agree 100 percent," another resident said. "I just moved from the Harlington building because of the danger and the shootings around it."
Mayor Pedro Segarra said the city has not stopped fighting the violence.
"We will continue to battle perception," he said in a statement. "But the truth is that our city is safer than it's been in decades. Arrests are down, crime is down, solvability is way up."
Bridgeport's police chief said he was furious with his city's ranking.
"I think I speak for police chiefs across the country when I say 'studies' like this don't dignify a response," said Chief Joseph Gaudett. "Yet, here we are again. A string of these junk studies come out every year even though the FBI implores people against it because they are overly simplistic and utterly misleading."
New Haven's police chief told Eyewitness News that he would need to take a look at the numbers before commenting.
Many people in Hartford did say they feel safe because the capital city is the insurance capital.
Segarra said there are positives about the city. He said he hopes people will look at that as well.
