“American Sniper” has now hauled in $300 million at the domestic box office – a feat only accomplished by 50 other films in history.
After ending Friday with a domestic total of $291.5 million, American Sniper hit the $300 million mark by Sunday afternoon.
But “American Sniper” continued to break records this weekend besides breaking $300 million. It became the highest grossing war film of all time and the second highest grossing R-rated drama ever (The Passion of the Christ grossed $370,782,930).
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “American Sniper is the most successful war-themed film of all time domestically, eclipsing Steven Spielberg's WWII classic Saving Private Ryan, not accounting for inflation. Saving Private Ryan, released in 1998, earned $216.7 million in North America. Taking inflation into account, that would equal roughly $312 million in today's terms, a mark Sniperis about to overtake.”
“This is another extraordinary benchmark for an extraordinary film,” Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures said. “Rarely does a film come along that strikes such an emotional and thought-provoking chord with such a wide audience.”
