A Culture Of Desease: Don't eat restaurant tortilla chips until you read this

03/20/2014

Blanquitas on 190 North Williams Road in San Benito is ordered shut down for 1 major health violation--roaches!
The inspection stems from a public complaint about roaches in the tortilla chips.
An inspector snaps photos of insect contamination throughout areas of the kitchen.
The Food Patrol visits Blanquita's to ask the owner why he stayed open with the insect contamination.
Martin Morin talks about the violation.
He's the owner.
"Why didn't you just close on your own?" Action 4's Ryan Wolf asked.  "Why didn't you just take the initiative to protect the public?"
"I closed when they told me too," Martin said.
An inspector finds live roaches at the microwave, prep area, along the walls, television and even along the rubber lining of the freezer.
The Food Patrol asks whether he believes it's his responsibility to keep paying customers safe.
"I'm sorry for the inconvenience," Martin told Ryan.
"Is it something you wish in hind sight that you handled differently?" Ryan asked.  "What would you have
done?"
"A lot more pest control and more cleaning," he responded.
Blanquitas has since reopened and the roaches are said to be gone.
A restaurant in Brownsville is so dirty you have to see the kitchen conditions to believe it.
An inspector snaps photos of filthy vents, expired foods, some dated from 2013, along with moldy-looking cutting boards and even roaches!
Tortilleria Maderos on 1155 Minnesota Road is the worst this week on Food 4 Thought with 61 demerits on a March 6th inspection.
The restaurant is ordered to comply with a number of health and sanitation issues before the city re-inspects them.
Los Nortenos on 1524 West Jackson in Harlingen is this week's featured top performer with a zero demerit health score.
The restaurant is previous Food Patrol sticker winner in multiple years.
Jennifer Rios is glad to hear Los Nortenos is on the clean side of things as a customer.
She's asked about the dirty diners featured on Food 4 Thought.
"I think, oh, I'm never going to go there," she said.  "It's bad to hear that you go to a restaurant and you're not keeping it clean because you're paying for your service."
The restaurant serves up a number of delectable dishes including fajitas.
But the staff thinks their breakfast tacos bring in a lot of customers.
"Nortenos!" they shouted while holding a new top performer sticker.
