(CBS) – Some adults take their right to vote for granted — or don’t even bother. For one group of 17-year-olds, it was a different story Tuesday.
Giggles of excitement filled the halls of Gage Park High School as a group of students made history.
They were a handful of the 3,400 17-year olds in Chicago eligible to vote in the primary, under a new state law.
How enthusiastic were they? Yasmine Diaz says she had been researching candidates for weeks.
“It’s definitely a great experience – something I’m going to remember for the rest of my life. It’s kind of cool to be making history in a way,” she said.
About 30 students from Gage Park voted. The school created an elaborate campaign to encourage them to vote.
