Dementia-Related?: Harry Reid Hospitalized with Several Broken Bones

1/3/2015

WASHINGTON – The Democratic leader of the U.S. Senate, Harry Reid, was hospitalized Thursday in Las Vegas after breaking several ribs and facial bones when he fell off an exercise machine, his office said Friday.

Reid, 75, “received treatment at University Medical Center in Las Vegas” for injuries he suffered in an accident at his home in the town of Henderson, Nevada, his office said in a communique.

“A piece of equipment Senator Reid was using to exercise broke, causing him to fall and break a number of ribs and bones in his face,” it said.

The lawmaker was admitted overnight as a precaution” though his doctors “expect a full recovery,” his office said.

The Nevada senator is one of the most influential politicians in Washington and has acted as Democratic majority leader in the Senate since 2007, though beginning next Tuesday when the new Congress takes possession, that post will be occupied by the until-now Republican minority leader, Mitch McConnell, who will assume leadership of the majority which now goes to his party.

“Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene,” his office said.
