Another Bomb Goes Off in Chilean Resort

9/11/2014

SANTIAGO – Another bomb exploded Wednesday afternoon at a shopping center in the Chilean ocean resort city of Viña del Mar and two people were taken to the hospital suffering from minor injuries.

Police said the blast occurred about 5 p.m. in a bathroom in a Tottus supermarket.

Authorities said this bomb was similar to the one that exploded on Tuesday at the Open Plaza shopping center in Viña del Mar, 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of Santiago.

The attacks were perpetrated in the coastal city following a bombing Monday near a Santiago metro station that injured 14 people.

Authorities do not yet know who was responsible but the investigation so far is pointing in the direction of anarchist groups.

As a result of the Monday attack, the Chilean government and the opposition on Wednesday sealed a political alliance to confront terrorism.

“I want to thank you for your presence here ... The unity of the country is very important because what these groups are seeking to do with this type of act is not to destabilize a specific government, but rather the democratic system,” Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said at the beginning of the meeting she held on Wednesday with representatives of the political parties.
