Enforcing the laws already on the books more strictly will eliminate the need for
yet another law.
The City of Port Isabel is getting serious when it comes to reducing the number of stray cats and dogs. On August 26, city commissioners approved an ordinance that requires all residents to spay and neuter their pets.
It may seem like a drastic move but, Port Isabel Animal Services Committee Chairwoman Glenda Stafford, said it's a positive step for the community and the animals.
"The animal control situation is just out of control and killing the animals isn't the answer," Stafford said, "because there's just more to follow. For decades we've been euthanizing hundreds and hundreds of animals, and there's still hundreds on the street."
With more pets spayed and neutered, Stafford said, the numbers of animals at the shelter will decrease and so will the cost to maintain it.
"There's a number of issues involved when you have a large homeless pet population," Stafford said.
Animal Care Services Director Oscar del Abra said this new ordinance does not mean that someone will go door to door to ensure animals are spayed or neutered, however, he is hoping people will comply.
"It's a new city ordinance that is going to be enforced, they're going to have to do it, or they're going to be given a citation (and) they would have to go to court and pay a fine," del Abra said.
City leaders realize putting a pet or several of them, through a surgical procedure, can be costly. That's why they are stepping-in to help those financially strapped with a half-price discount voucher.
Residents can expect to get a notice about the new pet ordinance with their next water bill.
