A mother of two is accused of leaving her children alone for more time than she actually spent with them.
Records obtained by Action 4 News reveal the condition which the woman’s 9-year-old daughter and 14-year-old son lived among.
An awful stench could be detected in their living quarters located in McAllen.
Inside the apartment were maggots on dishes and trash throughout the living space where a 9-year-old girl was left alone to cook for herself, documents said.
The mother, Patricia Autran, would pawn the family’s items to purchase crack, a probable cause statement obtained by Action 4 News reveals.
Reports indicate the 9-year-old girl attempted to cook a meal, but burned herself on the stove while trying to prepare food.
Instead, the girl would drink water when she became hungry.
The police report reveals the 9-year-old became “very thin” over the summer.
During the school year, the girl’s 14-year-old brother would feed his sister when his mother did not.
The 14-year-old boy was not home at the time of the alleged arrest as he stays with other family members during the summer.
A family member showed up to the apartment several times, knocking on the front door, before the 9-year-old answered.
The girl was told not to answer the front door, not even for family, court records show.
When the 9-year-old was off from school, Autran would allegedly drop her off at the apartment and leave her alone.
Reports show, the elementary student would lock herself in her room when Autran would smoke crack.
Sometimes the mom would invite friends over, while the 9-year-old locked herself in her room.
A report reveals authorities arrested the woman after her child was left alone specifically on July 6th.
The 37-year-old remains jailed on Wednesday, August 8th with her bond set at $10,000.
She is behind bars at the Hidalgo County Jail charged with abandoning or endangering a child.
